the Bembel

original bembel jug turned into
the modern can

A jug that has a round belly is the oldest type of vessel in Europe, but the Bembel gets its neck from the Frankfurt jug. Just like the spout and the handle. The decoration consists of organic paintings representing apple branches and apple wreaths. In addition, it is often decorated with the name of the winepress or pub. The shape protects from heat and light and the handle is perfectly placed for carrying the heavy weight.

Neck can still be cleaned, but does not allow aromas to escape.

The Bembel has a cultural meaning for me as well as a great connection to my origin and identity.

It is mainly used in Hesse to serve apple wine in pubs. Therefore, it is a sign of togetherness and sociability. Due to the manufacturing of the cider, as well as the jug in Hesse, it has a very local reference to my home and contains many memories of evenings with friends and family.

lasered into wood and glass

The typical pattern of the Bembel is still hand-painted today. It represents stylized variants of an apple tree or apple wreath. Thus, the Bembel forms a coherent concept from the cider to the decoration.

To reproduce the handmade work and become more familiar with the pattern first sketches were made with oil pastels and alcohol markers. However, painting with watercolor can best mimic the process of painting with a brush.

An important part of this is the visibility of the brush strokes and their overlapping.

This translucency of the paint was picked up in the next experiment. A laser cut an MDF wood panel and a blue Plexiglas sheet in the familiar pattern so that the inner parts could be removed and interchanged. This creates an interesting play between the wooden panel and the slightly transparent glass.

patterns
colors of the apple tree

Due to the origin of the pattern of apple trees, as well as the contents of the jug, cider, a new color scheme should be natural and show this. Inspired by an apple tree throughout the year, a color palette was created.

It contains brown for the trunk, green and red for the apple, as well as the colors of the bud, flower and pistil. Shown here in abstracted forms and named by RAL colors.
The aim of the first examination of the form was to change individual features and observe the subsequent change in use.

Here, even small transformations turn the useful object into an ornament.

Any modification of the handle results in a low carrying capacity, if the belly is deformed too much, or the neck is too long, cleaning is impossible, and a neck that is too open lets the aromas escape.

Due to these difficulties and the desire to modernize, an adaptation of the Bembel can is obvious.

To imitate the belly of the jug, the can becomes round and represents a modern and handy version of the Bembel.
